Beginner's Walkthrough of the DStv Installation Wizard

If you've never used the DStv installation wizard before, don't worry. It's a short set of screens that appears on a new or reset decoder and teaches the box how to find your channels. This walkthrough is for Yzerfontein homeowners and holiday visitors who'd like to understand each step before pressing any buttons.

Quick answer: The DStv installation wizard is the first-time setup on your decoder. You pick a language, tell it what kind of dish setup you have, check that signal is coming in and then let it search for channels. Most beginners only get stuck at the signal screen, and that usually means the dish or cable needs help.

What the DStv installation wizard is, in plain words

Your decoder knows nothing about your dish when it leaves the shop. The wizard is how it learns. It asks a few simple questions, listens for the satellite and then saves a list of channels.

You'll usually meet it in three situations: a brand-new decoder, a decoder that's been reset to factory settings, or one that has moved to a different house. If you're moving a decoder, our relocations and reconnections service can handle the dish side for you.

Words you'll see on the screens

A handful of terms pop up during setup. Here's what they mean before you start.

WordWhat it means
LNBThe small arm on the front of the dish that collects the signal and sends it down the cable
Single LNBThe type used with single view decoders, such as the HD decoder
Smart LNBA DStv LNB that sends several signals down one cable, needed for Explora decoders
TunerThe part inside the decoder that receives signal. An Explora has three
Signal strengthHow much signal reaches the decoder
Signal qualityHow clean that signal is, and the number that counts most
ScanThe decoder's search for channels at the end of setup

A beginner's walk through the DStv installation wizard

Take it slowly. Read each screen, then press OK only when you're happy. Here are the DStv installation wizard steps, in the order most people see them.

  1. Turn everything on. Switch on the TV, then the decoder, and pick the TV input the decoder is plugged into. The wizard should appear once the decoder has started up.
  2. Choose your language. Use the arrow buttons and press OK.
  3. Tell it about the dish. An Explora on its own dish uses a Smart LNB, and an HD decoder on its own dish normally uses a single LNB. Not sure? Ask whoever installed it. If you've just bought an Explora, our Explora installation team can fit the Smart LNB.
  4. Look at the signal. A screen shows bars or numbers for each tuner. Wait for them to settle. Explora owners must wait until all three tuners show signal.
  5. Let it search. The scan fills in your channel list. Put the remote down until it's done.
  6. Check your account is active. If channels show an error afterwards, the decoder may need activating or re-authorising, which you can do through the MyDStv app.

What the installation wizard step 4 poor signal message means

Many beginners stop at the screen often shown as step 4 of 5, with a poor signal warning. It's not your fault and you haven't pressed the wrong button. Something between the dish and the decoder needs attention.

Our page on checking DStv signal strength explains the numbers on that screen in more detail.

Why the wizard often greets you at a Yzerfontein holiday home

Lots of homes in Yzerfontein stand empty midweek or between seasons. When you arrive, someone may have reset the decoder, a rental guest may have unplugged it, or the box simply needs a fresh setup. Seeing the wizard on arrival is common.

The weather doesn't help. Very strong wind and salty sea air work on dishes, brackets and connectors all year. Our article on why coastal installs are different explains what that does over time, and our holiday house checklist helps you prepare for the season.

Homes in Grotto Bay, Jacobsbaai and Ganzekraal face the same coastal conditions. Farms out towards Darling often have longer cable runs that lose a bit of signal along the way.

DStv installation wizard not scanning? Try these first

These safe steps are all done from inside the house. None of them need tools or a ladder.

  • Switch the decoder off at the wall, count to sixty and switch it back on.
  • Follow the cable to the back of the decoder and make sure it's pushed firmly into the LNB IN port.
  • Wait for strong wind or heavy rain to pass, then run the wizard again.
  • Go back to the dish question and check your answer matches your LNB.
  • Look for a cable that's been pinched under a door or window.

A dish that has been knocked out of line shows clear warning signs, and our list of signs your dish needs realigning will help you spot them.

Safety first: Please don't climb onto the roof or stand on a ladder to adjust the dish. West Coast wind can be fierce, and even a small change needs a proper signal meter to get right. Never open the decoder or touch the LNB wiring.

Getting help, and what to tell us

If the wizard still won't finish after those checks, call a technician. You won't break anything by stopping, and running it again won't move the dish.

It helps to tell us which decoder you have, what the signal screen shows and whether the home has its own dish or a shared one. Our satellite dish alignment visit includes a meter check, and our DStv signal repairs service handles damaged cables and LNBs.

DStv installation wizard: FAQs

What is the DStv installation wizard?

It's the first-time setup that appears on a new or reset DStv decoder. It asks about your language and dish, checks that signal is coming in and then searches for your channels. Once it finishes, live TV starts and the wizard closes.

Why is my DStv showing the installation wizard?

Usually because the decoder was reset, moved to a new dish or never finished its last setup. It can also come back if the scan keeps failing. Work through it calmly, and if the signal screen stays poor, the dish or cabling needs a technician.

Do I need internet to complete the wizard?

No. The wizard works off the satellite signal coming from your dish, not your internet connection. Internet only matters later on an Explora, for extra connected features such as Catch Up Plus.

Can I clear the installation wizard without a remote?

Not easily. You need the remote to answer each screen and confirm the signal. If your remote isn't working, try fresh batteries first, or get a replacement remote before you start the setup.
